Trump Welcomes Skilled Immigrants to Teach U.S. Workers in Chip and Missile Production

US President Donald Trump said on Nov 19 that the companies constructing major semiconductor facilities across the United States will need to rely on thousands of trained specialists from abroad. He described their arrival as essential for keeping these multibillion-dollar projects moving.

While speaking at the U.S.–Saudi Arabia Investment Forum in Washington, D.C., Trump argued that bringing in these workers through H-1B visas aligns with his “MAGA” agenda. According to him, these jobs cannot be filled by people drawn “straight from the unemployment line.”

Trump also acknowledged to the audience that taking this stance “hurts his polling” among some in his hard-right MAGA base, but added that “smart people” understand why it’s necessary.

“They don’t get it yet,” he said. “These roles require expertise Americans haven’t been trained for. If companies investing billions can’t bring in their own experienced teams, those plants won’t open, won’t function, and won’t succeed. That’s just the truth.”

Trump has faced strong pushback in recent days after telling Fox News host Laura Ingraham that the United States lacks enough skilled labor to build advanced manufacturing sites. His comments enraged anti-immigration conservatives who insist the U.S. should restrict all immigration—legal or illegal—under the belief that foreign workers take jobs from Americans.

At the investment forum, Trump revisited the issue of legal immigration and stressed its importance to America’s technological growth. He argued that allowing specialized workers into the U.S. is necessary for training Americans and helping the country achieve world-class production standards.

He pointed to a chip-making facility in Arizona as an example, saying that such complex operations can’t be established without foreign expertise and capital.

“I will welcome those workers,” Trump said. “I respect my conservative supporters, I respect MAGA — and this is MAGA. These foreign specialists will train our people to manufacture computer chips, and before long, Americans will be running everything. Then those workers can return home, which is usually what they want.”
