UK Prime Minister ‘Mr. Keir Starmer’ is reviewing proposals to abolish or reduce visa fees for highly skilled professionals, a move aimed at drawing the world’s best minds to Britain. According to the Financial Times, the plan is part of a wider effort by Starmer’s “global talent task force” to strengthen the UK’s economy by bringing in leading scientists, academics, and technology experts.
Under the proposal, visa charges could be reduced to zero for exceptional individuals, such as graduates of the world’s top five universities or winners of prestigious international awards. Discussions on the reforms have been taking place inside Number 10 and the Treasury, though no final decision has been made.
The debate has gained urgency following a major policy shift in the United States. The Trump administration recently announced a new $100,000 fee for H-1B visas, which are commonly used by U.S. tech companies to hire overseas talent. The contrast between Washington’s tougher approach and London’s potential reforms has fueled calls for the UK to position itself as a more welcoming destination.
Currently, Britain’s global talent visa costs £766 ($1,030) per applicant, with the same fees applied to dependents. Government officials have yet to issue a formal response.
