UK New Immigration Rule Targets Skilled Foreign Workers,
Curb Social Care Recruitment

The UK government is implementing significant changes to its visa system, including stricter rules for skilled worker visas and a shift away from overseas recruitment in social care, which were presented to parliament in the form of a "Statement of Changes" to the Immigration Rules. These changes, effective from July 22, 2025, aim to reduce net migration, prioritize highly skilled workers, and ensure the UK workforce is developed and supported.
Here's a breakdown of the key changes:

  • Increased Skill Thresholds:

The minimum skill level for Skilled Worker visas will be raised, primarily impacting those seeking entry with qualifications below RQF level 6, which is generally equivalent to graduate level.

  • Social Care Visa Changes:

Overseas recruitment for social care workers will be halted, with a transition period for those already in the UK.

  • Graduate Visa:

The length of the Graduate visa, which allows international students to stay and work in the UK after graduation, is being reduced from two years to 18 months.

  • Stricter Dependant Visa Rules:

Dependants of those on work visas will face stricter English language requirements.

  • Increased Settlement Period:

The time required to qualify for permanent residency (Indefinite Leave to Remain) will increase from five to ten years.

  • Transitional Arrangements:

Existing Skilled Worker visa holders will be allowed to continue their current status, including renewals, employment changes, and bringing dependants, under the previous rules.

  • No Parliamentary Vote:

These changes are implemented through "Statements of Changes to the Immigration Rules" laid before Parliament, and they take effect automatically unless actively rejected by either the House of Commons or the House of Lords.
The government is also reviewing salary thresholds for skilled worker visas and has commissioned the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to conduct a review of the current requirements.
