New witness (Harjit' friend), Harminder Singh Brar comes forward to accuse Sgro
However, many others have questioned Singh's claims and his credibility. He has been fighting
deportation for 17 years; was convicted of crimes in India; and just last year in Canada
he was found liable in a civil case of debit and credit card fraud worth about $1-million.

Harjit Singh, the man at the centre of the latest allegations against former immigration minister Judy Sgro, remains in a Toronto detention centre awaiting a deportation hearing on Wednesday. But one of his friends has now come forward to back up Singh's claims.

Singh says he provided pizza, food and campaign volunteers in exchange for Sgro's promise to solve his immigration problems so he could stay in Canada.

His friend, Harminder Singh Brar told CBC News on Monday that midway through the 2004 federal election campaign he, his 16-year-old son and Harjit Singh were introduced to Sgro by Ihor Wons, her chief of staff. Brar says Wons told Sgro that Singh was having immigration problems. According to Brar, Sgro couldn't have been clearer. "She said, as long as you [Singh] bring in the volunteers and do the volunteer work we'll see how much we can do for you to solve your immigration problems," said Brar.

Sgro is in Florida, far away from the controversy. But she has been unequivocal about her relationship with Singh. "I had nothing to do with the individual. I have never had a conversation with him," Sgro said last Friday.

But pictures taken at Sgro's victory celebration the night of the federal election show Harjit Singh standing right behind her.

It doesn't prove Singh's allegation that the two have met, but it does show Singh had some involvement in the campaign. So too does the letter received by Singh, signed by Sgro, thanking him for his help.

For her part Sgro is also under a cloud because of allegations that she helped an exotic dancer from Romania, who also worked on her re-election campaign, to obtain a temporary residence permit.

The federal ethics commissioner is investigating those charges.
