Peel Regional Police stopped hundreds of cars in a Mississauga shopping mall parking lot and issued hundreds of tickets on May 22, Friday night as part of a crackdown on large gatherings in parking lots, some of which are believed to be related to illegal street racing.

The Police said:

  • The blitz was conducted in the area of the Heartland Town Centre at Mavis and Britannia Rds.
  • They stopped 370 vehicles, issued 112 bylaw tickets and 67 Highway Traffic Act tickets, and laid two criminal charges
  • Gathering in groups is not okay” but doing so in order to go out street racing is even worse

The police will be “scouring large parking lots at big box malls where cars and individuals have been gathering late at night” and issuing citations and charges, where appropriate.

Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie told the media:

  • There has been a general disregard for rules particularly highway traffic rules.
  • I have heard many people complaining about cars speeding and drag racing and people gathering in large groups late at night and of course Peel Regional Police heard about it too an now they are out late at night checking out these hotspots.
  • This is a joint effort and I want to really thank Peel police and bylaw enforcement for being so diligent.

The PENALTY for street racing is an automatic 7-day driver's licence suspension, and the motorist's car is also impounded for seven days.

Penalties in court can include up to 10 years in jail, a fine of up to $10,000, as well as possible demerit points.
