NRI Dr. Jay Varma, was ousted from his role at a pharmaceutical company on Monday, a week after recordings surfaced of him boasting about hosting illicit sex parties and attending a crowded underground rave during the peak of the pandemic.
Varma, who previously served as a senior health adviser to then-Mayor Bill de Blasio, was terminated by SIGA Technologies, where he held the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. The company announced the decision in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), stating his dismissal was "effective immediately" and included his removal from the company’s Board of Directors.

This move followed revelations made public by conservative podcaster Steven Crowder, who released audio recordings of Varma bragging about his involvement in drug-fueled sex parties and breaking COVID-19 safety rules while overseeing the city’s pandemic response. In one recording, Varma claimed, “I did all this deviant, like sexual stuff,” while admitting he kept it hidden due to his leadership role in the city’s COVID-19 efforts.

City Councilman Bob Holden (D-Queens) was among those who responded harshly to the revelations, saying Varma's firing was "long overdue" and criticizing the doctor for imposing strict measures on New Yorkers while engaging in reckless behavior. “Varma boasted about harassing people into submission over the vaccine mandate and admitted to participating in illegal sex parties," Holden stated. "The hypocrisy is outrageous.”

The news has sparked outrage among city business owners, parents, and lawmakers, who gathered outside City Hall on Monday to express their anger. Councilwoman Inna Vernikov (R-Brooklyn) condemned Varma's actions, pointing out the stark contrast between his personal behavior and the public health restrictions he enforced. “While grandmothers took their last breaths alone on cold hospital beds, Dr. Varma was fulfilling his sick fantasies with hundreds of sweaty strangers,” Vernikov said.

The fallout from the scandal continues to grow, with many calling for greater accountability for public officials involved in pandemic-related decision-making.
