West Bengal government has filed an affidavit of compliance before the
Supreme Court on its order cancelling the admissions of 75 NRI candidates
in two state-run medical colleges, Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee
          said.
The affidavit was filed by the state Chief Secretary Ashok Gupta on
Wednesday as per the instruction of the apex court to file the same
within two days and posted for further hearing in the first week of
          January, he said.
Gupta, who returned from Delhi after filing the affidavit, on Thursday,
met the Chief Minister. He, however, refused to make any comment on
the steps to be taken by the state government about the students whose
          admission had been cancelled.
The Supreme Court in its December 13 order expressed displeasure over
the non-compliance of its orders by the West Bengal Government and directed
it to immediately cancel admissions of 75 NRI candidates in two medical
colleges run by the state in excess of the sanctioned strength.
The Chief Minister has already expressed his government's firm determination
to 'do something' for the affected students but said the apex court's
          order was binding.
"We will definitely so something for these students and can't
shirk moral responsibility," he said, adding the state government
          sympathised with the affected students.
