                          Thalassemia: Mass awareness must 
                            
                            Chandigarh, January 21: THE Minno Sambhi Free 
                            Blood Service for Thalassemic Children was launched 
                            by Punjab Governor and UT Administrator General S.F. 
                            Rodrigues (retd) at the Rotary and Blood Bank Resource 
                            Centre in Sector 37, here today. This project for 
                            thalassemic children has been sponsored by an NRI 
                            from Ludhiana, Dr Mahender Sambhi, in memory of his 
                            wife Dr Minno Sambhi. 
                          The Centre, assisted by three nursing homes, jointly 
                            provided professional and technological help. General 
                            Rodrigues called for the need of launching mass awareness 
                            campaign to fight thalassemia besides providing supportive 
                            therapy to the children suffering from the disorder. 
                            He appealed to the participating NGO to cover all 
                            the registered thalassemic patients in Chandigarh 
                            in a phased manner under the umbrella of free blood 
                            service, which started today. 
                           
                            
                            PGIMER director Dr K K Talwar said there were about 
                            300 registered patients of thalassemia who needed 
                            active support and participation from all quarters 
                            for meeting their regular blood needs.
