Canada advances new Medical Countermeasures Laboratory Facility in Winnipeg

Drawing on lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Canada is strengthening Canada's capacity to respond to future public health emergencies through the development of a new medical countermeasures laboratory facility. The facility will be co-located with the existing world-renowned National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg, Manitoba and will expand Canada's capacity to develop vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostic tools.

Today, the Honourable Terry Duguid, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South, on behalf of the Honourable Marjorie Michel, Minister of Health, and the Honourable Joël Lightbound, Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement and Quebec Lieutenant, has announced a $10.2 million contract to Architecture49 Inc., for architectural and engineering services for the medical countermeasures laboratory facility..Read More

 

Canadians are seeing fewer doctors as emergency rooms handle the overflow

At a time when Canadians are experiencing increasingly crowded emergency departments (EDs) and longer and longer wait times, new research from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) puts concrete numbers behind the frustrating phenomenon.

For example, an April 2026 release reported that ED visits grew to 16.1 million in 2024–2025, up from almost 15.5 million in 2023–2024 for an increase of nearly 4 percent.

A June 2026 release noted increased ED crowding because of growing pressures on Canada’s health-care systems resulting from limited primary care access, a shortage of long-term care beds, and acute care hospital beds, as well as older patients with more complex needs...Read More

In support of the Budget 2025 commitment to fill critical labour gaps with high-skilled talent, the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and Maggie Chi, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health, today announced new measures to support Canada’s health care system by making the path to permanent residence simpler for international doctors.

As part of these measures, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will create a new Express Entry category for international doctors with at least one year of Canadian work experience in an eligible occupation, gained within the last three years. These doctors are already working in Canada on a temporary basis, helping patients and contributing to our health care system.
