US President Donald Trump has nominated NRI (Non-resident Indian) Shireen Mathews as a judge of the US District Court for the Southern District of California, USA
On Aug 28, Shireen Mathew’s nomination to Southern California Southern District federal court in San Diego was announced by the White House. Her appointment has to be approved by the Senate. After confirmation, Matthews will be the first Asian Pacific American woman and first NRI to serve as an Article III federal judge in the Southern District
Article III judges "hold their office during good behavior", which means they have a lifetime appointment, except under very limited circumstances. Article III judges can be removed from office only through impeachment by the House of Representatives and conviction by the Senate.

As a prosecutor, Shireen Mathews uncovered a multi-million dollar fraud in stolen medical equipment and also won one of the highest restitution awards for the Social Security (general public pension) trust fund.

An engaged community leader, Shireen serves as a Lawyer Representative for the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference and is on the Board of Directors for the San Diego Chapter of the South Asian Bar Association.

Shireen regularly defends clients before a range of government agencies, including the DOJ, HHS-OIG, EPA, and DOD.

She has defended a wide variety of white-collar criminal cases involving allegations of bribery of public officials, defense contractor fraud, false claims, and health care fraud.

She also serves on Jones Day's firmwide Diversity, Inclusion & Advancement Committee and is actively involved in the Firm's pro bono initiative to provide legal assistance to veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.
Shireen Mathews got Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from Georgetown University.
She also received her Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Duke University School of Law
