Proclamation of April 2023 as “Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month” Celebrated by Mayor Gene Hernandez of Yorba Linda at Yorba Linda City Hall with Sikh Community

Yorba Linda,CA - April 5, 2023 - The Mayor of Yorba Linda, Gene Hernandez, along with Mayor Pro Tem Tara Campbell and City Council Members, Councilwoman Dr. Beth Haney, Councilwoman Janice Lim and Councilman Carlos Rodrigues, officially proclaimed the month of April as Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month, celebrating the rich heritage and contributions of the Sikh community in the city. The proclamation ceremony took place at the City Hall on April 4, 2023, and was attended by members of the Sikh community including Bicky Singh, Founder of Sikhlens, local dignitaries, and community leaders.

The proclamation ceremony was a momentous occasion, with Mayor Gene Hernandez acknowledging and appreciating the invaluable contributions of the Sikh community in Yorba Linda. The Mayor highlighted the Sikh community's positive impact on the city's cultural, economic, and social fabric, and expressed gratitude for their unwavering commitment to service, compassion, and equality.

Commissioner Shivinderjit Singh and Dr. Ginny Kaur shared insights into Sikh culture, history, and values with the audience and were invited by the Mayor to accept the Proclamation on behalf of the local Sikh Community.

"We are thrilled to have Mayor Gene Hernandez support in proclaiming April as Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month," said Commissioner Shivinderjit Singh, Chairman of the Orange County Sikh Engagement Committee, a Delegate from the 40th Congressional, 32nd Senate and 59th Assembly District, and Chair Pro Tem Planning Commissioner, City of Yorba Linda.

 

"This proclamation is a step towards fostering greater understanding and appreciation of Sikh culture and values, and we are honored to be recognized by the City of Yorba Linda, “ said Dr. Ginny Kaur, a Yorba Linda resident, mother of 2 Sikh children, a healthcare professional, serves on various interfaith boards,  Sikhlens Head of Public Relations and Outreach, and is on the Advisory Board of Kaur foundation. Dr. Ginny Kaur showed a segment  of the Kaur Foundation Cultural Safari documentary “ Meet the Sikh Family” to the City Council members and the attendees.

“The proclamation of Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness about Sikhism and its values, dispel myths, and promote understanding and appreciation among the wider community”, said Sahej Kaur Chawla (Sikh girl), a  2nd year Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) student at University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

“The proclamation sends a powerful message that diversity is valued and appreciated in the community, and young Sikhs are encouraged to be proud of their Sikh identity without fear of discrimination or prejudice”, said Amrit Singh Chawla (Sikh boy), final year Pre-med student at UCLA .

" The proclamation  acknowledges the significant contributions of Sikh Americans to the local community ", said Bicky Singh, founder of  Yorba Linda based Sikhlens foundation, which strives to create awareness about Sikh culture and heritage. 

Mayor Gene Hernandez expressed his admiration for the Sikh community's resilience, diversity, and contributions to the city, and reaffirmed his commitment to promoting inclusivity, diversity, and mutual respect in Yorba Linda.
