NRI Varun Mohan, Windsurf CEO, Joins Google to Boost AI Coding

NRI Varun Mohan, co-founder and CEO of AI-coding startup Windsurf, has joined Google DeepMind as part of a high-stakes $2.4 billion talent-and-license deal.
The agreement grants Google a non-exclusive license to select elements of Windsurf’s proprietary “vibe coding” technology, while Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and key R&D staff shift to Google, where they'll focus on “agentic coding” for the Gemini project.
This decisive move comes after Windsurf’s proposed $3 billion acquisition by OpenAI fell through—partly due to Microsoft’s IP-related objections—providing Google an opening to enhance its AI coding suite.
