NRI Dr. Srinivas Mukkamala, physician, has been appointed the 180th President of the American Medical Association (AMA), becoming the first person of Indian origin to lead the organization in its 178-year history.
Dr. Mukkamala, a board-certified otolaryngologist from Michigan, has been actively involved in the AMA for over two decades. He has previously served as the chair of the AMA Board of Trustees and was known for his advocacy in advancing health equity, promoting physician well-being, and defending science-based policy during critical public health moments.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Mukkamala emphasized the importance of innovation, inclusion, and physician advocacy, saying:

"This honor is not mine alone—it belongs to every immigrant child who dreams big and believes in service through science. We will continue to fight for a healthier, fairer, and more equitable health care system."

The AMA, the largest physician-led organization in the U.S., plays a pivotal role in shaping national health policy. Dr. Mukkamala’s leadership is seen as a progressive step reflecting the diversity and global roots of America's medical community.

His appointment has been widely welcomed by South Asian medical professionals across North America, recognizing the significance of representation at such a high level in U.S. health care leadership.
