NRI Rajesh K. Gupta Named Founding Dean of UC San Diego’s New Data Sciences School

NRI Rajesh K. Gupta, a renowned computer scientist and academic leader, has been named founding dean of the newly established School of Computing, Information and Data Sciences (SCIDS) at the University of California San Diego.
Launched in 2024, SCIDS brings together the strengths of the Halicioglu Data Science Institute (HDSI) and the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) to drive cutting-edge research and education in artificial intelligence, computing and data science – disciplines at the heart of today’s technological transformation.
Gupta, who founded HDSI in 2018, has been instrumental in shaping UC San Diego’s data-driven and interdisciplinary research ecosystem. As dean, he will lead a community of more than 8,000 students and more than 50 faculty across 16 disciplines, focused on using data to address real-world challenges and preparing the next generation of AI innovators.
Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla praised Gupta as an “ideal candidate” to expand UC San Diego’s legacy in high-performance computing and AI. Gupta, an alumnus of IIT Kanpur and fellow of IEEE, ACM, and AAAS, also holds advanced degrees from UC Berkeley and Stanford University and has held leadership roles on major NSF and DARPA-funded research projects.
“SCIDS is more than a new school – it is a bold vision to make data science the heart of interdisciplinary research,” said Gupta. “We are building an academic home where data becomes actionable knowledge for the betterment of society.”
