NRI Prof. Anantha Chandrakasan has appointed Massachusetts Institute of Technology a longstanding faculty member and current dean of the School of Engineering—as its next provost.
Chandrakasan, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science since 1994, also serves as MIT's inaugural Chief Innovation and Strategy Officer. He previously led MIT's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and was appointed dean in 2017.
MIT President Sally Kornbluth praised his “nimbleness, entrepreneurial spirit and boundless energy,” noting his track record in launching major cross‑Institute initiatives and securing external funding.
As provost, Chandrakasan will oversee academic programs, faculty recruitment, budgeting, and research priorities. He plans to establish faculty and student advisory councils and focus on strategic financial planning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and bolstering talent across the Institute.
He succeeds Cynthia Barnhart, who will return to her faculty role after stepping down in July
