Early Life

  • NRI Piyush Gupta, Singaporean banker, born on Jan 24, 1960 in Meerut, India. Married to Ruchira Gupta, a physiotherapist. His parents are R.S. Gupta and Minnie Gupta.
  • He studied at St. Columba’s High School, Delhi and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University. Then he completed Post Graduate Diploma in Management from IIM Ahmedabad.
  • He began his career in 1982 as a management trainee at Citibank India, served as chief-of-staff to Citibank India’s head.

Career

  • He moved to Singapore in 1991 as chief-of-staff to Citigroup’s Asia head. Then posted to Indonesia in 1998 as country manager. He left Citigroup in 2000 to start a dot-com venture.
  • Then closed the startup and rejoined Citigroup in 2001. He served as Country Officer in Malaysia from 2002 to 2007. He helped to expand Citigroup’s branch network in Malaysia. Later became Country Officer in Singapore and head of Corporate & Investment Banking in ASEAN. He was appointed as CEO of Citibank for Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand in 2008. Then he joined DBS Group as CEO in 2009, credited with transforming DBS into a leading Asian financial institution.Encouraged DBS to adopt a “big tech” mindset similar to Amazon and Alibaba. He spoke at the Asia Leaders Series in Zürich in 2018 about Asia’s economic rise. Led DBS to launch two new exchanges and make two acquisitions in 2020. He Advocated for cautious adoption of blockchain and Web 3.0 in 2021. He announced his retirement as DBS CEO on 7 August 2024, effective March 28, 2025. Tan Su Shan was named his successor as CEO of DBS. He is vice-chairman of the Institute of International Finance since 2013. He has been a board member of Enterprise Singapore since 2024.

Hobbies & Activities

  • Enjoys reading, bird watching, golf, badminton, and crosswords. He serves as an ambassador for CanKids India, supporting children with cancer.
  • Became a Singapore citizen in 2009.
  • Holds Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) status.
