NRI Sandhya Reddy Elected Mayor of Sydney’s Strathfield Council

NRI Sandhya "Sandy" Reddy, an Australian lawyer, community leader, and local government representative, has been elected as the 73rd Mayor of Strathfield Council in Sydney, Australia. Councilors elected Reddy during the council's general meeting on September 29, where Esther Kim was also elected as Deputy Mayor. Reddy will serve as Mayor until September 2028.
Born in Telangana and educated in Hyderabad, Reddy pursued studies in law and postgraduate subjects at Osmania University.
After moving to Australia, she built a career in immigration and migration services, including running an education and migration consultancy.
Her qualifications also include a master’s degree in Anthropology and a Graduate Certificate in Migration Law from the Australian National University. Before entering local government, Reddy became active in community service.
She supported newly arrived migrant families, participated in community initiatives, and volunteered with the State Emergency Service.
During the 2019-20 bushfire season, she assisted with the bushfire information line. In recognition of her community contributions, she was named Strathfield Citizen of the Year in 2020.
She was first elected to Strathfield Council in December 2021.
She was subsequently elected Deputy Mayor in 2023.
She was re-elected as a counselor in 2024. Her election as Mayor marks the latest phase of her public service career within Sydney's multicultural Strathfield community.
She returned to the position of Deputy Mayor in September 2025.
