U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Champlain, New York border crossing recently apprehended an Indian national with an active felony warrant from the state of Indiana.
On May 28, officers encountered 42-year-old Gurdev Singh, an Indian citizen, after he was denied admission into Canada.
During the initial screening process, a background check using the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) system revealed that Singh was wanted in Indiana.
The warrant listed charges including child solicitation and solicitation of sexual intercourse, both classified as Level 4 felonies under Indiana law.
CBP officers immediately detained Singh and brought him to a secondary inspection area for additional questioning.
His identity was confirmed, along with the outstanding warrant issued by the Plainfield Police Department in Indiana.
A search of Singh’s belongings led officers to discover several edged weapons, including a sword and a hatchet.
Further review of his immigration status showed that Singh had overstayed his visitor visa, which had expired in 2016, making him unlawfully present in the United States.
“I’m proud of the vigilance and professionalism shown by our CBP officers in identifying and detaining this individual,” said Steve Bronson, Port Director at Champlain.
“Our officers used their skills and access to national law enforcement systems to apprehend a fugitive wanted for serious crimes. Those in the country illegally, especially those accused of endangering children, will face justice,” Bronson stated.
Following the arrest, Singh was handed over to the New York State Police as a Fugitive from Justice.
He is currently being held at the Clinton County Jail, awaiting extradition back to Indiana.
As a reminder, all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
