NRI Dr. Ritesh Kalra Charged in New Jersey for Trading Drugs for Sex

NRI Dr. Ritesh Kalra, 51, internist formerly practicing in Fair Lawn, has been charged by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of New Jersey with three counts of illegal opioid distribution in exchange for sexual favors, and two counts of Medicaid fraud.
Federal documents allege Kalra operated a “pill mill” from 2019 to early 2025, issuing over 31,000 prescriptions of opioids such as oxycodone and promethazine with codeine—some days issuing more than 50 scripts—without legitimate medical reasons.
Multiple female patients have accused him of coercing oral and anal sex as payment for prescriptions.
Kalra is currently under home detention, barred from practicing medicine or prescribing drugs, and has been ordered to shut down his clinic. He was released on an unsecure $100,000 bond.
U.S. Attorney Alina Habba described the allegations as a gross abuse of trust, saying Kalra “used that position to fuel addiction, exploit vulnerable patients for sex, and defraud New Jersey’s public healthcare program”.
If convicted, Kalra faces up to 20 years in prison for each drug-distribution count, and up to 10 years for each health care fraud count, along with substantial fines.
