Local Jurisdiction Releases Noncitizen Sex Offender Despite Immigration Detainer

ERO Baltimore Apprehends Indian National Convicted of Sex Crimes Against Maryland Minor

Deportation officers from ERO Baltimore's Criminal Apprehension Program captured a 32-year-old Indian national near his Ellicott City residence on March 20.

Acting Field Office Director Matthew Elliston emphasized the danger posed by the offender's presence in Maryland communities and ERO Baltimore's commitment to ensuring the safety of local residents.

The individual arrived in the United States on December 12, 2019, as a nonimmigrant visitor through Dulles International Airport. He was apprehended by U.S. Customs and Border Protection on November 14, 2021, at John F. Kennedy International Airport while attempting to board a flight to Qatar. At the time of his arrest, he was wanted by Maryland's Montgomery County Police Department for sex crimes against a minor.

Following his arrest, U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued an immigration detainer against him, and he was subsequently taken into custody by the Montgomery County Police Department on November 18, 2021. He faced charges related to sex abuse of a minor and multiple counts of sex offense.

Additionally, the Howard County Police Department arrested him on February 15, 2022, on further charges of sex abuse of a minor and sex offense.

Despite the efforts of law enforcement, the offender's release was facilitated by the local jurisdiction's refusal to honor the immigration detainer, allowing him to evade deportation.
