The Singapore government has ordered major social media companies to immediately block domestic access to 14 online posts targeting the country's Indian community. On Saturday, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced that police had used the Online Criminal Harms Act (OCHA) to issue official disabling directions to YouTube, Facebook, and X, forcing the platforms to block the offensive content from local feeds.
Initial investigations into the problematic material revealed that the coordinated narratives likely originated from an online platform based in China. The malicious content, which aimed to undermine Singapore's strict multicultural model, was initially generated abroad before being systematically shared and amplified across various global websites and digital channels.
The restrictive actions come amid rising concerns over foreign actors attempting to incite racial disharmony and division within the country. In its official statement, the ministry emphasized that the targeted online materials represented a deliberate attempt to sow social discord by generating ill-will against ethnic Indian citizens and residents.
Addressing reporters at a community event, Second Minister for Home Affairs Edwin Tong stated that the foreign videos explicitly attacked Singapore's multi-ethnic society. He reiterated that the state maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward foreign interference that threatens domestic stability, affirming that every ethnic group holds an equal and respected position.
