The family of Savitha Shanmugasundaram, a 21-year-old Indian-origin student tragically killed in a shooting in Texas on March 1, 2026, has announced a $1 million scholarship endowment in her honor.
The scholarship has been established at University of Texas at Austin in collaboration with the Texas Indian Students Association. It aims to support students from Title I schools, helping those from underprivileged backgrounds access higher education opportunities.
Savitha, remembered as a bright and compassionate young woman, was pursuing her academic dreams when her life was cut short in the tragic incident. Her family said the initiative is intended to keep her legacy alive by empowering future generations of students.
