US court has overturned the wrongful conviction of NRI Subramaniam “Subu” Vedam, who spent 43 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Vedam, now 67, was convicted in 1982 on charges of armed robbery and murder based on flawed evidence and questionable witness testimony.

Recent DNA testing and new witness statements proved Vedam’s innocence, leading to his immediate release. Legal experts have called this one of the longest wrongful imprisonments in American history.

Vedam, originally from Chennai, India, expressed mixed emotions upon release. “I lost my youth, my family, and my dreams — but I never lost hope,” he said outside the courthouse.

Advocacy groups have hailed the ruling as a victory for justice reform and are demanding an official apology and compensation for Vedam. His legal team has announced plans to file a civil rights lawsuit against the state for wrongful imprisonment.

The NRI community in the US has also rallied in support, pledging to help Vedam rebuild his life after more than four decades behind bars.
