India has brought back around 270+ of its citizens who were misled by fraudulent job offers and forced to engage in cybercrime and other illegal activities in scam compounds across Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, the government announced.
Authorities worldwide have been intensifying efforts to dismantle these criminal networks, leading to the rescue of thousands from cyber scam centers along the Thailand-Myanmar border this year.
Last month, China and Indonesia also repatriated several of their citizens who had fallen victim to similar schemes. India’s foreign ministry confirmed that Indian embassies in Myanmar and Thailand coordinated with local officials to facilitate the return of 283 nationals. They were flown home on an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft from Mae Sot, Thailand, on Monday.
In a continued crackdown on these fraudulent operations, Thailand recently arrested 100 people connected to scam centers.
The United Nations has reported that criminal syndicates have trafficked hundreds of thousands of individuals into these operations, generating billions of dollars annually through illegal online scams.
In response to the growing threat, the Indian government has urged its citizens to verify foreign job offers carefully and conduct thorough background checks on recruiting agents and employers before accepting work abroad.
