NRI Erakkodan Abinraj, 26-years-old from Singapore has been sentenced to seven months in prison for molesting his neighbor while she was asleep in her own bed. The perpetrator, Erakkodan Abinraj, unlawfully entered the woman’s flat by climbing in through a shared balcony before committing the crime.
Trespasser Violates Victim’s Privacy
On March 5, a Singapore court sentenced NRI Abinraj after he pleaded guilty to a molestation charge. An additional charge of housebreaking was also considered during sentencing.
The incident took place in the early hours of September 22, 2024. Abinraj accessed his neighbor’s home by scaling the kitchen balcony and used his mobile phone’s flashlight to move around undetected. He then entered the master bedroom, where the 36-year-old victim was sleeping beside her husband. Despite the presence of another person, he proceeded to grope the woman.
Victim Wakes Up to Horror
Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Kathy Chu informed the court that Abinraj had lived next door to the victim for about a year but only knew her casually.
As the woman slept, he attempted to pull down her underwear. She suddenly woke up and, at first, thought it was her husband. When she turned to the other side, she was shocked to see Abinraj standing there, holding his phone with the flashlight on.
Terrified, she screamed, waking her husband, who immediately confronted the intruder. Overcome with fear, Abinraj ran from the room, urinated in panic, and begged the couple not to call the police.
Legal Consequences
Despite his pleas, the couple called the police. Officers arrived and detained Abinraj, who admitted to sneaking in through the kitchen balcony. However, he initially tried to downplay his crime, falsely claiming that his phone had fallen on the victim and startled her.
DPP Chu condemned his actions, stating, “The offence took place in the victim’s bedroom, in the middle of the night. The accused invaded the sanctity of the home.”
The prosecution sought a jail term of six to eight months, and the court ultimately handed down a seven-month sentence.
In Singapore, molestation is punishable by up to three years in jail, a fine, or caning.
