Neena Singh, a resident of Montgomery for 24 years and the former deputy mayor, assumed a pivotal role last Thursday during the Montgomery Township Reorganization Meeting. Following unanimous support from fellow township committee members, Singh was officially sworn in as the newly elected mayor.

Having previously served as deputy mayor, Singh's extensive connection to Montgomery and her commitment to public service have contributed to her election victory. The unanimous vote by the township committee members underscores the unity and endorsement of Singh's leadership.

In a groundbreaking event for Montgomery Township, Neena Singh, a dedicated member of the Township Committee, has made history by becoming the first Sikh and Indian American woman to assume the role of mayor in the state of New Jersey.

During the Township Committee's reorganization meeting last week, Singh expressed her gratitude and acknowledged the significance of the moment. "Today is a historic moment for our community and our entire state," she declared. Singh also commended her fellow committee members for their unwavering support and highlighted the township's commitment to inclusive, transparent, and forward-thinking governance.

Neena Singh said :

  • Thursday’s event was a “historic moment” for the community and New Jersey at large.
  • She thanked committee members for their support and praised the community for “breaking barriers and showing our state what inclusive, transparent and forward-thinking governance looks like.”

Singh's unanimous selection as mayor reflects the unity and support within the Township Committee. Vincent Barragan, who was chosen as deputy mayor, added to the diversity of leadership by becoming Montgomery's first Latinx deputy mayor.

Dennis Ahn, another committee member, was sworn into his first term, marking a historic moment as the first Korean American elected official in Somerset County. Patricia Taylor Todd, also sworn in for her first term, made history as the second Black Township Committee member in Montgomery.

The swearing-in ceremony was officiated by Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, emphasizing the significance of this milestone. Video congratulations poured in from prominent figures, including Sen. Cory Booker and state Sen. Vin Gopal, who acknowledged the importance of Singh's role as a true role model for young South Asian girls across New Jersey.

State Sen. Andrew Zwicker extended his congratulations via video and joined in person, along with Rep. Andy Kim, Assemblyman Roy Freiman, and members of the Somerset County Board of Commissioners. Singh, reflecting on her journey, expressed gratitude for settling in Montgomery Township, a town she described as representative of the American Dream.

Singh's historic appointment as mayor not only marks a personal achievement but also symbolizes progress and diversity in local governance. As the first Sikh and Indian American woman to hold this position in New Jersey, Singh's leadership serves as an inspiration for future generations, breaking barriers and paving the way for a more inclusive political landscape.
