Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong engaged in talks with Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar in Canberra, addressing Canada’s claims that India targeted Sikh activists on Canadian soil. While briefing the media, Wong emphasized Australia’s commitment to safeguarding multiculturalism and assured the Sikh community that they deserve respect and safety, in line with Australia’s values.
Wong acknowledged Canada's judicial process and reiterated Australia’s stance on respecting the rule of law and national sovereignty. As a Five Eyes intelligence alliance member, Australia has close ties with Canada, the U.S., U.K., and New Zealand.
Jaishankar countered the allegations, expressing that Canada has often made claims without substantial evidence and has even placed Indian diplomats under surveillance, which he deemed "unacceptable." He also highlighted concerns over the political space in Canada that allows extremist voices, stating that freedoms should not be misused.
