Jaya Badiga, a native of Vijayawada, has made history as the first woman from Andhra Pradesh to be appointed as a judge in the United States. Recently named a judge in the Sacramento County Superior Court in California, Badiga's appointment marks a significant milestone. Previously serving as a commissioner in the same court, she is also the first Telugu individual to hold a judicial position in the US.

Badiga's academic journey began in India, where she pursued her law degree at Osmania University in Telangana. She later moved abroad for advanced studies, furthering her legal expertise. Her appointment to the bench is a source of pride for her family, particularly her father, Badiga Ramakrishna, an industrialist and former Machilipatnam Member of Parliament.

During her swearing-in ceremony, Badiga highlighted the cultural significance of her achievement. She proudly spoke in Telugu, a momentous first for such an occasion in Sacramento, which was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience. In her address, she expressed gratitude and concluded with a powerful Sanskrit mantra, translating to "Lead me from illusion to truth, from darkness to light, and from death to immortality."

Badiga's appointment not only celebrates her personal accomplishments but also represents a breakthrough for the Telugu community and women in the legal profession. Her journey from Vijayawada to the Sacramento County Superior Court underscores the potential for aspiring lawyers from diverse backgrounds to achieve remarkable success on an international stage.
