In a tragic event, four Indian medical students drowned while swimming in the Volkhov River in northwestern Russia, local law enforcement reported on Friday. The incident occurred on Tuesday in the city of Veliky Novgorod, as confirmed by the regional branch of Russia's Investigative Committee.

The Investigative Committee stated that the students were swimming in a prohibited area of the river. According to the report, two students were swept away by the strong current, prompting two others to jump in an attempt to rescue them. Unfortunately, all four went underwater and did not resurface.

A fifth student, who was part of the group, was rescued and survived the ordeal, as stated by the Indian consulate in Saint Petersburg. The consulate also mentioned that the surviving students were medical students at a university in Veliky Novgorod. Efforts are currently underway to repatriate the bodies of the deceased students to India, and their families have been informed about the tragic loss.

As of Friday, Russian investigators reported that two of the four bodies had been recovered from the river. The search for the remaining two continues.

Veliky Novgorod, known as one of Russia's oldest cities, is located more than 150 kilometers south of Saint Petersburg. The Volkhov River, where the incident occurred, flows through the city and eventually leads to Lake Ladoga in northwestern Russia.
