Sai Teja Nukarapu, a 22-year-old student from Telangana, India, was tragically killed during an armed robbery at a shopping mall in Chicago on Friday.
Sai Teja, a native of Khammam district, had been working part-time at the mall’s cash counter when the assailants opened fire while looting the store. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot, according to a report by India Today.
Sai Teja had recently moved to the United States three months ago to pursue an MBA after completing a BBA in India. His untimely demise has left family, friends, and the Indian community in shock.
The Consulate General of India in Chicago expressed deep concern over the incident, labeling it as “shocking” and urging authorities to take swift action against those responsible.
Another Tragedy Hits Indian Students in the US
This heartbreaking incident occurred just days after another Indian student from Telangana, 23-year-old Aryan Reddy, accidentally shot himself fatally on his birthday in Atlanta, Georgia.
Surge in Indian Students Studying in the US
Despite these incidents, Indian students continue to flock to the United States for higher education. Recent consular data revealed that India has surpassed China as the leading source of international students in the US for the 2023-24 academic year. Telangana and Andhra Pradesh account for a significant share, contributing 56% of these students, with Telangana alone representing 34%.
In 2024, the US Consulate in Hyderabad conducted over 47,000 student visa interviews, a sharp increase from 35,000 the previous year, according to Consular Chief Rebekah Drame. Public Affairs Officer Alexander McLaren noted that nearly 330,000 Indian students traveled to the US last year, with many pursuing master’s degrees.
The tragic loss of Sai Teja highlights the vulnerabilities faced by international students abroad, as the community calls for greater safety measures and justice for victims.
