Shivank Avasthi, Indian student, shot dead near University of Toronto in Canada

Shivank Avasthi, 20, Indian student, was shot dead near the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus in Canada on December 23, local police and media reports said.
Toronto Police responded around 3:34 p.m. to reports of an “unknown trouble” in the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road area near the campus. Officers found Avasthi with a fatal gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident has been recorded as Toronto’s 41st homicide of 2025. The suspects fled the area before police arrived, and no arrests have yet been made. Authorities have appealed to the public for information to help with the investigation.
Avasthi was reportedly a doctoral student at the University of Toronto Scarborough, and friends and teammates described him as a supportive and cheerful individual. The university’s cheerleading team paid tribute to him in a social media post, remembering his positive presence.
