A 22-year-old Indian-origin student, Gurasis Singh, was tragically killed in a stabbing incident in Sarnia, Ontario. Singh, an international student pursuing a business degree at Lambton College, was fatally attacked by his housemate, 36-year-old Crossley Hunter, during an altercation early Sunday morning.
According to a statement by the Sarnia Police, the incident occurred at a rooming house on Queen Street where both individuals lived. "During a physical altercation in the kitchen, one resident accessed a knife and stabbed the other multiple times, leading to his death," the police said.
Sarnia Police Chief Derek Davis confirmed that the investigation is ongoing despite the arrest of the suspect. “The Sarnia Police Criminal Investigations Division is diligently gathering all evidence to determine the circumstances and any potential motive behind this tragic act,” he said. At present, authorities do not believe the crime was racially motivated.
Expressing condolences, Lambton College stated, "We have been in contact with Gurasis Singh's family and are assisting them with funeral arrangements and repatriation efforts."
The Indian Consulate in Toronto also issued a statement, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Indian national Shri Gurasis Singh in Sarnia, ON. A suspect has been arrested, and we will remain in close contact with authorities while offering all necessary support to the bereaved family.”
Singh’s death has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting calls for increased safety measures for international students. The Sarnia Police and Lambton College have pledged their support to Singh’s family and friends as they navigate this difficult time.
