NRI Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary at MeitY and CEO of the IndiaAI Mission, India’s push to develop indigenous AI foundational models is attracting interest not only from homegrown talent but also from Indian-origin researchers abroad.
Speaking at a virtual roundtable ahead of the Nasscom Technology & Leadership Summit, Singh revealed that 60 applications have been received under the foundational AI model initiative, with some proposals coming from Indian researchers overseas who are partnering with Indian firms to build solutions.

The Indian government has allocated ₹1,500 crore under the IndiaAI Mission to support these efforts, following Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s announcement about developing a Large Language Model (LLM) tailored for India. Singh emphasized that India is also focusing on strengthening its AI talent pipeline through initiatives like AI and data science courses in schools and the YUVAi program, which has trained over 100,000 students.

He cited the Stanford AI Index 2024 report, which ranks India as a global leader in AI skill penetration, adding that the country’s engineers and researchers contribute significantly to top global tech firms.

As AI adoption grows, industry leaders stress the need to nurture AI-driven entrepreneurship. Nitin Seth, CEO of Incedo, highlighted the need for a "Tsunami" of startups to counterbalance potential job losses in the short term due to AI automation.

With strong policy support and a growing talent pool, India is positioning itself not just as a hub for AI development but as the "AI-use capital of the world."
