NRI Mohammed Asif, 35, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison after being convicted of healthcare fraud, U.S. Attorney Charles Neil Floyd announced on Tuesday. The sentencing was handed down by the U.S. District Court in Seattle, marking the end of a case that involved fraudulent claims submitted to the American healthcare system.
According to federal prosecutors, Asif participated in a scheme that involved submitting false documentation and billing information to obtain payments he was not entitled to. The court noted that his actions resulted in significant financial loss to healthcare programs designed to assist vulnerable populations.
In addition to the prison term, Asif may face restitution requirements, which will be determined based on the total financial damage caused by the fraudulent claims. Authorities emphasized that such crimes undermine the integrity of the healthcare system and divert resources from those who genuinely need them.
U.S. Attorney Floyd stated that the sentence reflects the seriousness of the offense and sends a strong message that healthcare fraud will be pursued aggressively, regardless of the perpetrator’s nationality or immigration status.
