The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has successfully secured the custody of Monika Kapoor, an accused in a long-standing economic offence, from the United States. Kapoor, who had been evading Indian law enforcement for over two decades, is being brought back to India today.
According to the CBI, Monika Kapoor fled to the US in 1999 following her alleged involvement in a 2002 import-export scam. Along with her two brothers, she reportedly forged documents related to a jewellery business. These falsified documents were allegedly submitted to secure duty-free licenses for importing raw materials from the Indian government.
After extensive coordination with American authorities, a CBI team travelled to the United States to formally take her into custody. The agency described the extradition as a major step forward in its efforts to bring fugitives to justice and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law beyond national borders.
The CBI team is now returning to India with Monika Kapoor. Upon arrival, she will be produced before the appropriate court and will face trial for her alleged crimes.
