Ludhiana police have arrested a man who was allegedly
posing as a Canadian police official and had solemnised
two marriages. A cheating case has been registered
against him by Division number 5 police.
Addressing mediapersons here today, Superintendent
of Police (SP) R K Jaiswal said the man has been identified
as Inderjit Singh Gill alias Inderjit Singh Dhamota.
The SP added that Inderjit hailed from Sahnewal and
had migrated to Canada in 1992 after he was adopted
by one of his fathers friends.
SP Jaiswal informed that police have impounded a
Qualis car on which Inderjit Singh had put up a red
light for posing as a police official from Canada.
Police also claimed to have seized some fake documents
including some fake identity cards from him.
Inderjit was arrested from near Bharat Nagar Chowk
on Wednesday evening. At the time of his
arrest, Inderjit was wearing the uniform of Canada
police, Jaiswal said. The SP highlighted
that police had received information that a man was
seen roaming about in the city for over one month
in the uniform of Canada police.
SP said that after his immigration to Canada in 1992,
Inderjit Singh started working with a private security
agency and was posted at Hudson Bay Shopping Complex
in Victoria B.C. in Canada. In 1999, he was arrested
in Canada on the charges of impersonation. In 2003,
he came to India and got married to one innocent girl
and took her to Canada after one month of marriage.
But in Canada, both filed a case for divorce with
mutual consent. The case is still pending, said Jaiswal.
SP said that Inderjit Singh kept coming to India
and used to stay in Ludhiana. He came to India in
the end of 2004 and again on March 5 this year. After
coming here, he again got married to another local
girl. This marriage had been fixed through a matrimonial
advertisement which Inderjit Singh had placed in a
newspaper. For getting this marriage fixed, Inderjit
Singh had posed as a police official from Canada.
SP said that the new wife of Inderjit Singh was shocked
to know that he wasnt a real policeman.
SP said that they had got in touch with the Canadian
embassy and were now contacting the Canada police
for getting the antecedents of Inderjit Singh.
