NRI Dr. Neil Anand, a 48-year-old Indian-origin doctor, has been convicted of money laundering and participating in a conspiracy to illegally distribute prescription drugs, including the powerful opioid oxycodone, a U.S. federal court in Pennsylvania ruled on Tuesday.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Anand issued pre-signed prescriptions for oxycodone, which were later used by interns to dispense approximately 20,850 tablets to just nine patients. Oxycodone is a highly addictive painkiller linked to the ongoing opioid crisis in the United States.
Federal prosecutors also revealed that Anand distributed “Goody Bags” containing unnecessary medications through pharmacies he owned, making them a condition for receiving the controlled substances. These prescriptions were then fraudulently billed to private and government insurance programs, which paid approximately $2.3 million for the medications.
To conceal the illicit earnings, Anand funneled over $1.2 million into an account under his father’s name for the benefit of his minor daughter, officials said.
