NRI, Sikh couple, Gurmit Singh Tiwana, 79, wife Surjit Kaur,
72, of Fraser Valley city went out for evening walk. Four Caucasian
teens started throwing racial slurs on them as well as stones.
Tiwana said we tried to escape ourselves and all of a sudden
we saw them following us. Once the boys reached to them, one boy
threw a large rock that struck his wife's ankle and she needed
four stitches.
The police arrested two teenagers, aged 14 and 18 and continue
to investigate suspected racially motivated attack.
Tiwana said the youths didn't stop their verbal abuse even they
were sitting handcuffed in the police car.
Abbotsford Police officer Casey Vinet said, "It really is
a cowardly attack on this defenceless elderly couple and this
kind of behaviour will not be tolerated and police take it very
seriously. We will make sure that those who perpetrate crimes
based on ethnicity, religion, colour, or any other factor, are
held accountable."
