NRI Professor Sadanand Verma, The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has posthumously honored by establishing Mathematics Fellowship Fund. The fund will support outstanding graduate students—masters and PhD—in the mathematical sciences at UNLV.
Professor Verma joined UNLV in 1967, becoming the first PhD-holder in mathematics at the then Nevada Southern University. Over 55 years of service—including 22 years as department chair—he transformed the department into a rigorous academic unit renowned for its graduate programs in mathematics and computer science.
Born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, Verma earned his doctorate in mathematics from Wayne State University (Detroit) in 1958 and remained a pillar of the Las Vegas academic community until his retirement in 2022 at the age of 92. He passed away earlier this month, aged 95.
UNLV will host a memorial service and reception on Friday, June 13, to honor his legacy and formally launch the fellowship.
Colleagues and students remember Verma as a visionary who nurtured the seeds of what later became UNLV’s thriving computer science program. His enduring contributions to mathematics education and mentorship have inspired generations of scholars in Nevada and beyond
