NRI Balraj Khanna, painter, writer and curator, Honoured with Prestigious UK Exhibition

NRI Balraj Khanna, artist, will be celebrated with Lines of Flight, the first major retrospective of his work, at Birmingham's Ikon Gallery from 30 September 2026 to 21 February 2027. The exhibition will showcase more than 40 paintings created over six decades, offering the most extensive presentation of his artistic journey to date.

Born in Jhang, Punjab (now in Pakistan), Khanna moved to Britain in 1962 and developed a distinctive abstract style shaped by migration, memory, nature, and cultural identity. A self-taught artist, his work evolved through personal experiences, including the Partition of India and a life-changing period in France that inspired his unique approach to abstraction.

The exhibition will feature rarely displayed paintings from the 1960s and 1970s alongside larger works produced between the 1970s and early 2000s. Visitors will explore themes of landscape, childhood memories, diaspora, post-colonial identity, and the natural world that have defined Khanna's celebrated career.

The retrospective also marks the 25th anniversary of Astral Dance, Khanna's monumental painted safety curtain at Birmingham Hippodrome. Ikon Gallery and Birmingham Hippodrome will jointly host public events, guided tours, and educational programmes to celebrate the milestone and introduce new audiences to his work.
