The Indira Gandhi International Airport may be guarded by the
CISF, supposed to be more alert than local police, but complaints
of baggage losses are doing no good to the security officials’
reputation. In yet another incident of stealing — the ninth
such in past 30 days — an NRI has reported that his two
bags containing cash and valuables amounting to over Rs 7 lakh
were stolen from the airport’s arrival lounge.
The victim, Jagat Prakash Singh, said in his report to IGI airport
police that he was returning from Britain with gifts for family
members here. Singh is a resident of Cleverland, UK; his family
resides in Vishal Enclave, Rajouri Garden.
Singh’s complaint said he had left customs and had got
into the arrival lounge, where he was greeted by family members
and friends. “Suddenly, I realised that my trolley with
baggage was missing from behind me,” his complaint said.
Nine such complaints have been registered at IGI’s two
police stations in past 30 days, with the modus operandi being
the same, an airport official said.
Singh said he was carrying a “large suitcase containing
gifts, gold jewelry, Rolex watch, digital camera, cam recorder
and CD player, whose approximate cost is £8,000 (Rs 6,00,000)”.
There was also a sports bag — “I had personal clothing
and some more gifts, worth Rs 80,000” in that. Singh had
arrived by Emirates Airline (EK-501) flight on the morning of
September 4. — Neeraj Chauhan
