FIRST PATIALA FEEDER CANAL REMODELLED PART OF
RS. 123 CR PROJECT
Chandigarh, 23rd February 2008
The Irrigation Department today formally released water into
1st Patiala Feeder which has been remodeled by the State Government.
At a brief ceremony at Manpur headworks near Doraha in Ludhiana
district, water was released slowly in the remodeled canal. The
Government has spent a total sum of Rs. 25 cr on the strengthening
and remodeling of 25 km section of the canal.
Congratulating the officials of the Irrigation Department, Punjab
Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal stated that the project would
provide great relief to the farmers of Malwa region in Patiala,
Sangrur and Mansa districts which were largely dependent on canal
irrigation. He further stated that the augmentation of the canal's
carrying capacity would help optimally utilize the water available
for surface irrigation and also help arrest the alarming decline
in the ground water in the region. The Government was committed
to rejuvenating the old irrigation system to provide a fresh boost
to agriculture in the State, he added.
Irrigation Minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon stated that the Department
had prepared an ambitious project of Rs. 3243 cr for upgradation
of the State's irrigation system including Rs. 1500 cr on creation
and lining of water channels. He complemented the Department's
engineers for completing the work in record time of around 3 weeks
of closure. The Department would be undertaking major works on
both remodeling of old canals systems, lining of water channels
and anti-water logging operations in the coming year, he added.
With the remodeled section of the 1st Patiala Feeder, the canal's
carrying capacity has increased by over around 1300 cusecs which
would immensely benefit the farmers of Malwa who had been deprived
over the years of their due water allowance. It is learnt that
the Kotla Branch and 2nd Patiala Feeder are likely to taken up
for upgradation in the next few months. These works have been
undertaken under the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme
where the Centre contributes 25% of the funds and State Government
contributes 75% of the funds for a particular project. Punjab
Government has been repeatedly urging the Central Government to
provide special dispensation under its national programmes for
assisting the State for upgrading its century old canal irrigation
system. Punjab Chief Minister had also raised the matter in the
last meeting of National Development Council in December 2007
as well as with Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, earlier
this week.
