US President announces first 25 million vaccine doses going to India
US sending at least 80 million doses overseas by the end of the month

Taranjit Singh Sandhu announced that India will be a big part of US President Joe Biden's newly-launched Global Allocation Plan of 25 million COVID-19 vaccines to neighbours and partner countries.

Last night, on June 03, Biden administration said the first details of the U.S. sending 80 million COVID-19 vaccines overseas with the aim of ending the pandemic globally.

  • We are sharing these vaccines to save lives and to lead the world in bringing an end to the pandemic, with the power of our example and with our values….Biden said.
  • US administration’s framework for sharing 80 million vaccines globally by the end of June.
  • 19 million vaccines will probably be shared by means of COVAX.

These are doses being donated free and clear to these countries for the sole purpose of improving the public health situation.
U.S. sending 80 million COVID-19 vaccines overseas and 75 percent of these doses:

  • Nearly 19 million—will be shared through COVAX, including:
    • approximately 6 million doses for Latin America and the Caribbean, approximately 7 million for South and Southeast Asia, and approximately 5 million for Africa, working in coordination with the African Union and the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
    • the remaining doses, just over 6 million, will be shared directly with countries experiencing surges, those in crisis, and other partners and neighbors, including Canada, Mexico, India, and the Republic of Korea

Jeff Zients of White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator, said the donations would be "surplus" from the supply the U.S. needs and would include the FDA-approved Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines.....

  • but not the Astra Zeneca vaccine.

US President Biden said:

  • Today, we’re providing more detail on how we will allocate the first 25 million of those vaccines to lay the ground for increased global coverage and to address real and potential surges, high burdens of disease, and the needs of the most vulnerable countries.

Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu said:

  • India will probably be a big recipient of US vaccines, and beneath the COVAX initiative.

US Govt. allow AstraZeneca, Novavax, Sanofi to distribute COVID-19 shots:

The White House removed a requirement that is part of the Defense Production Act that gives the U.S. preferential orders for the COVID-19 vaccines developed by

  • Novavax Inc. NVAX, +1.40%, and
  • Sanofi SNY, +0.15%.

None of these shots have been authorized in the U.S., but the change allows the companies to decide which orders, including from other countries, they will fulfill first.

  • "We are confident in our supply of our authorized vaccines," Jeff Zients, the White House COVID-19 response coordinator, said during a press briefing.

The vaccines authorized in the U.S. are the shots developed by

  • Pfizer Inc. PFE, +0.46%, 
  • Moderna Inc. MRNA, +1.89%, 
  • and Johnson & Johnson JNJ, -0.10%. 

The U.S. also plans to donate 25 million additional doses of its current supply over the summer, officials said.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said at a White House:

  • COVAX, or COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access, is a World Health Organization-backed global vaccine program helping with the distribution, but Sullivan added at the briefing that the U.S. will have a final say on where the doses go and its effort is focused on countries dealing with "urgent" needs.

The U.S. is not "extorting or asking concessions or imposing conditions," and included an apparent slight, "the way other countries who are providing doses are doing.

Zients highlighted one million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine were headed for South Korea in a matter of hours.

U.S. has already shared more than 4 million doses of vaccine with Canada and Mexico.
