NRIs, along with many US citizens, recently gathered at Times Square in New York City to celebrate Diwali. The program features a variety of cultural performances to mark the Hindu festival of lights celebrated in India on October 31.

Dignitaries in attendance included New York City Mayor Eric Adams, State Assemblywoman Jennifer Rajkumar, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, and India’s Consul General in New York, Binaya Pradhan. Mayor Adams shared his enthusiasm for the celebration on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "What better place to celebrate the festival of lights than in the Crossroads of the World?" He added that he was "proud to be with our Hindu brothers and sisters for the annual Diwali at Times Square celebration as we push away darkness and welcome in light across our city."

The Consulate General of India in New York also shared images of the vibrant celebration on social media, highlighting the participation of both Indian-American and American attendees. A special thanks was extended to event organizer Neeta Bhasin, as well as to Mayor Adams, Senator Schumer, and Assemblywoman Rajkumar for their support and attendance.

Diwali has gained growing recognition in the U.S., and since last year, New York City schools have officially recognized Diwali as a school holiday, further emphasizing the festival’s cultural significance in the city.
