  • US Congress Introduces 'Deepavali Day Act' Making Diwali A Federal Holiday ---This legislation was made and sponsored by a team of lawmakers, including Raja Krishnamoorthi, NRI businessman representing Illinois in the country's Congress. The legislation was introduced by a delegation of lawmakers, led by the New York congresswoman Carolyn B Maloney.

Maloney expressed her joy on this legislation being passed, "I'm very, very happy and excited to be introducing the Deepavali Day Act this week alongside members of the Congressional Indian Caucus, which will enshrine Diwali into law as a federal holiday.

"It is truly appropriate that Diwali this year symbolises our nation's continuing journey out of the darkness of COVID-19. My colleagues, Indian-American community leaders and I believe that there is no better time to enshrine Diwali as a federal holiday than in the wake of the terrible dark pandemic," said Maloney.

Former Pesident Barack Obama lit the ceremonial diya in the East Room of the White House. In his last year in office in 2016, Obama for the first time observed the festival of lights in the Oval Office.

Canada: Fireworks are also common, especially in cities like Mississauga, Brampton, and Vancouver, which have a large South Asian population. You’ll be able to sight firework displays in almost every neighbourhood. Until recently, fireworks were not permitted during Diwali. Now, as time goes on, some cities are more lenient about the use of fireworks on holidays like Victoria Day, Canada Day, and Diwali. Because of this, fireworks are more common in cities and towns in Canada during Diwali....according to Prepare for Canada news.

"Diwali is called the festival of lights. Rows of lamps called deepavali are lit inside and outside homes and buildings. Imagine how bright that must be! The lights represent the triumph of light over dark and the power of good over evil," Ramesh Gupta from Brampton said.

This year for the first time, the World Trade Center has been lit with a digital mural in celebration of the holiday, organized by the South Asian Engagement Foundation, along with a livestreamed fireworks show on the Hudson River.

Usually, the date changes slightly year on year, so it will begin on a different day in 2022.

For 2022, the expected date is Monday, October 24, while in 2023 Diwali should take place around Sunday, November 12.
