Halifax Regional Police are not treating NRI Gursimran Kaur's death at Walmart as suspicious.

The Nova Scotia Department of Labour has assumed responsibility for the investigation into the sudden death of NRI Gursimran Kaur, 19-year-old an employee at a Walmart bakery in Halifax. The investigation follows police findings that ruled out foul play in the incident.

NRI Gursimran Kaur body was discovered in a commercial oven in the bakery section of the Mumford Road Walmart on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 19. Halifax Regional Police confirmed on Monday that the death was not suspicious.

"This remains an active investigation, and as such, we are unable to provide further details at this time," the labour department stated in a release.
The department emphasized that workplace investigations are intricate and may take considerable time to complete. A stop-work order on the oven and bakery area has been lifted after an assessment confirmed that the oven met the manufacturer’s operating requirements.

Halifax Regional Police have conducted interviews and reviewed surveillance footage to rule out criminal involvement.
"We do not believe anyone else was involved in the circumstances surrounding the woman's death," said Const. Martin Cromwell in a video update.
Police have stated they do not plan to release further details, urging the public to avoid speculation out of respect for the grieving family.

NRI Gursimran Kaur immigrated to Canada with her mother two years ago, seeking a brighter future. Described as a "young, beautiful girl who came to Canada with big dreams" by the Maritime Sikh Society, Kaur’s untimely death has left the community in mourning.
The society also noted that Kaur’s mother, who also worked at the store, was the one who discovered her body.

The Walmart location remained closed on Monday. The company announced that the bakery oven where the incident occurred is being removed as part of a planned remodeling initiative across Canada.

A candlelight vigil was held in memory of NRI Gursimran Kaur, with friends, family, and community members gathering to pay their respects. An online fundraiser organized by the Maritime Sikh Society aims to support the family during this difficult time.

The Department of Labour is continuing its investigation, with no timeline for its conclusion.
