Indian Community of Southern California celebrates India’s Republic Day

Indian Community of Southern California celebrated, India’s Republic Day, on January 29, 2012, at The Rupee Room Restaurant, Orange, CA. The beautifully decorated restaurant was overcrowded with Indian Americans. The program started at 7:30 PM, in a traditional Indian way with Mantras rendered by Pandit Siddharth Pathak and Pandit Ramesh Bhatt. This was followed by lighting of the lamp and National Anthems of USA and India.

President Amrit Bhandari, who was also master of ceremonies, invited Guests of Honor, Congressman Ed Royce, Assemblyman Tony Mendoza, Mayor pro-tem Dr Prakash Narain and winner of Businessman of the year award Sunil Tolani to the head table. He also recognized guests in the audience.

Chairman Dilip Butani then welcomed the guests and in his brief speech said that it was on this day that the constitution of India came into force and India became a truly sovereign state. He introduced award winner Sunil Tolani who heads Prince Organization, owners of hotel networks that include Flags-Intercontinental Hotels, Holiday Inns, Hilton, Marriott, Sheraton, Hyatt Hampton and others. Sunil Tolani is one of the top winners of Holiday Spirit Award for the year 2011. The award is in the annual recognition of Orange County business owners who are kind, generous and full of goodwill all year long. Sunil’s dream has been to fill the earth with love and warmth of hospitality.

Butani then called K.V. Kumar who introduced Congressman Ed Royce. Ed mentioned about his visits to India and also about his forthcoming election. Ed then presented Businessman of the year award to Sunil Tolani, Next Mohan Sharma introduced Assemblyman Tony Mendoza who mentioned about coming week’s recognition of India Republic Day in the State Assembly. Ramesh Ramnani then introduced Mayor pro-tem Dr Prakash Narain who in his speech mentioned about the importance Republic day. All the guests highly spoke about Indo-American relations and presented certificates of recognition to the committee members.

The cultural program began with Ganesh Vandana by Shruti Vijaylakhmi, student of Kalaimamani Dr Sinduri founder-director of Savitri Arts Academy. Shruti also performed Bharat Natyam Jatishwaran. Next was Bhangra by Ramneet and Gurneet. Vijay Patil introduced the Bhangra artists while Amrit Bhandari introduced Dr Sinduri. These items were followed by songs by Dr Dhiren Bush, Dr Ramesh Kothari, Sheela Bhandari, Dr Kailash Dhamija and Amarjeet Dhamija. Prakash Pancholi took care of the hall decoration while Lal Thakrar and Kris Kakkar helped in seating arrangement. The program ended with a sumptuous dinner
