Mobilizing Support for Gurmoh Gill

It is very unfortunate that three-year-old lovely boy Gurmoh Gill has been diagnosed with a
neuro degenerative disease called Spastic Paraplegia (SPG4). It is a rare aggressive and
progressive neurodegenerative condition. Without appropriate intervention, this disease
will progressively steal Gurmoh’s ability to walk, speak, eat, and ultimately his
independence and cognitive ability. This diagnosis has shattered the lives of not only
Gurmoh’s parents, Stalinjeet and Navpreet but also a lot of his near and dear ones. As a
matter of fact, our entire community has been engaged in fundraising and other activities
to fund a cure for Gurmoh. Researchers at McGill University, Montreal and Berkley
University in California have been actively involved in finding a suitable gene therapy that
will help not only Gurmoh but also thousands of other children like him. The total cost of
this process is estimated at $8 million. It is an ultra-rare disease, and traditional government funding is not available.
To their credit, the Gills have mobilized our community, places of worship, electronic and
print media like nothing before. This time it is not only the South Asian media but also the
mainstream media that has come on board to help in this worthy cause. So far, these
efforts have brought in close to $2.55 million. Thus, there is still a long way to go. Like many
other Gurdwaras, India Cultural Centre of Canda Gurdwara Nanak Niwas, 8600 #5 Road,
Richmond,BC has also started a fundraising campaign for Gurmoh. The response has been
overwhelming. Our Gurdwara congregation as well as those attending weddings and other
functions at this Gurdwara have been very generous. The Gurdwara management is very

In order to gain both more and financial support Gurmoh’s dad Stalinjeet Singh will be
travelling by road beginning his “Journey of Hope" for 3.2 million Canadian families battling
rare diseases at Canada Place on Saturday, August 1 at 10.00 AM. It will be appreciated if a
large number of supporters of this cause can gather at Canada Place to wish Stalinjeet well
on his long journey of hope to Ottawa. Stalinjeet will be carrying a letter from Gurmog’s
older five and a half years old sister for Prime Minister Mark Carney seeking Ottawa’s
support for Gurmoh’s cure. Along the way, Dr. Gill will be visiting various communities and
Gurdwaras seeking help for Gurmoh. We wish him well on this journey to save lives.
