Canada has one of the largest Punjabi populations outside Punjab. Our ancestors set foot on Canadian soil more than 130 years ago. To-day, close to two million Punjabis, including a large number of Sikhs call Canada their home and are spread all over Canada. Historically, wherever Sikhs have settled, one of their first priorities has been to build a Gurdwara. Thompson, Manitoba, a small, remote mining community 750 kilometers north of Manitoba, is one such community. Sikh Society of Thompson, a registered charity, established in 1974, has been serving the South Asian community there for the past 52 years.

This former church building was converted into a Gurdwara to serve the community. The Gurdwara’s small kitchen no longer meets the City’s Public Health requirements. The newly proposed kitchen that meets the City’s Public Health requirements will be quite expensive to build. The Society, with limited membership and limited resources, is seeking financial support from Gurdwaras, businesses and sangat for the construction of a fully code–compliant Community Kitchen at this Gurdwara Located at 111 Goldeye Crescent in Thompson, Manitoba.  A delegation from the Sikh Society of Thompson is currently visiting Metro Vancouver seeking financial support for their new kitchen project.

Earlier this week, this delegation visited India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara Nanak Niwas, 8600 #5 Road, Richmond, BC. They made a very compelling case for financial assistance.  The Gurdwara Executive committee gave a very warm welcome to them and listened patiently to their request for financial support. Later, after a brief discussion, the Committee decided to donate $25,000 to the Sikh Society of Thompson, Manitoba... Then, on Sunday, June 14, Committee Chairperson, Mrs. Kashmir Kaur Johal presented the cheque for $25,000 to Sikh Society of Thompson Secretary Kalwant Singh and Treasurer Inderjit Singh at the Gurdwara premises. Also present at the cheque presentation were President Mohan Singh Sandhu, Vice President Ubed Singh Sidhu, Secretary Balwant Singh Sanghera, Treasurer Kamaljit Singh Dosanjh, Assistant Secretary Kanwarjit Singh Sihota and Director Satwant Kaur Jarman. India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara Nanak Niwas Society is very pleased to be of any assistance to the Sikh Society of Thomson, Manitoba and its sangat.
