Gurmoh Gill -A Ray OF Hope for Thousands Suffering From Rare Diseases

Sometime ago, Surrey resident, three-year-old Gurmoh Singh Gill was diagnosed with a rare Spastic Paraplegia (SPG4) disease. Of course, his parents -Dr. Stalinjit Singh Gill, Dr. Navpreet Kaur Gill, their relatives and friends were devastated to hear this. However, both, along with their relatives and friends decided to find cure not only for Gurmoh but also for thousands of children suffering from rare diseases. They have mobilized our community like never before. The Gills, along with their hard-working team, have created unbelievable awareness and support for treatment of this rare disease that has affected not only Gurmoh but thousands of other children like him. It is rare, aggressive and progressively neurodegenerative condition. Researchers at McGill University, Montreal and University of California, Berkeley, with blessings from Health Canada have been actively involved in finding a suitable gene therapy that will help not only Gurmoh but also thousands of other children like him. It is an ultra-rare disease, and traditional government funding is not available.
To their credit, Gills and their team have mobilized our community, places of worship, electronic and print media like nothing before. This time, it is not only the South Asian media but also the mainstream media that has come on board to help in this worthy cause. So far, these efforts have raised $ 2.6 million. However, there is still a long way to go as the total cost is expected to be around $8 million. DARPAN is a popular magazine in the South Asian community. In its July/August issue, Darpan carried Gurmoh’s story under the title: The Little Boy Inspiring Hope Far Beyond Himself. Its opening paragraph captured Gurmoh’s situation very well as below:
“Three-year-old Gurmoh Singh Gill may never fully understand why strangers across the world know his name. But for countless families, the little boy from Surrey has become something far greater than a fundraising campaign. He has become hope.”
Like many other Gurdwaras, places of worship and organizations the management committee of India Cultural Centre of Canda Gurdwara Nanak Niwas, 8600 #5 Road, Richmond, BC started a fundraising campaign for Gurmoh a few weeks ago. The response has been overwhelming. Our Gurdwara congregation as well as those attending weddings and other functions at this Gurdwara have been very generous. The Gurdwara management is very thankful to each one of them for donating generously. It is a great credit to our community and various places of worship and organizations that people not only have opened their hearts but also their wallets to help such worthy cause.
